Language development is so much more than first spoken words, but consists of other categories, such as gestures, comprehension, and engaging in social play. Your Child's Early Language Milestones
0-6 months: Turns head toward sound source, smiles when spoken to, uses babbling to gain attention
6-12 months: uses 4-8 true words, points to learn new vocabulary, laughs when playing with objects, engages in peek-a-boo or other social game
12-18 months: Uses 16 gestures at 16 months, listens to simple stories and songs, uses approximately 50 true words at 18 months
18-24 months: Speech is 25-50% intelligible, waves for "bye-bye", protests by vocalizing "no, " combines words into two and three word utterances
2 Years: uses 200-300 true words, holds up finger to tell age, helps put things away, speech is 50-75% intelligible
3 Years: follows two-step directions, , takes turns and plays cooperatively, answers more complex questions like "who" and "why"
